Favorite Reads of 2018

Another year come and nearly gone. And what a year it’s been!

In a way, it’s been a year of transitions for me. I finished book 1 of a new cozy mystery series and started working on a brand new manuscript, went back to work as an analyst after staying at home with Sophie for her first year, and generally enjoyed the chaos of life with an active toddler who is constantly changing.

Through it all, there were books. Exceptional, cheesy, haunting, funny books.

I subscribe to Stephen King’s motto: if you don’t have time to read, you don’t have time to write. So this year, as in years past, I made a reading goal for myself. And I’m down to the wire; I have one book to finish (The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey) in order to meet my goal of 40 books.

Here are a few of my fave books from this year:

A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue: While I was reading this book, I remember thinking the only thing that could possibly make it any better would be pirates. And then, sure enough, pirates showed up! Seriously, cannot recommend this one enough.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman: This book made me laugh, think, and even get a little teary. I loved reading about Eleanor’s metamorphosis, how she slowly came to terms with her past and learned to embrace life.

Becoming by Michelle Obama: This woman is just so wise and empowering! I loved reading her story, and all her fascinating insights into politics and life at the White House.

Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas: The Throne of Glass series spanned 7 wonderful books and this was the final installment. I didn’t want it to end but also just had to know what happened! And Maas didn’t disappoint with that ending. Simply put, it was epic.

Lethal White by Robert Galbraith: This is probably my favorite mystery series right now. I wish JK Rowling/Robert Galbraith would write them faster! They are just so so good. Love the characters, love the setting, love the intricate mystery.

Circe by Madeline Miller: This book surprised me in how much I enjoyed it, and how long it’s stuck with me. About the Greek goddess Circe, this imagines her full story, giving her a voice and motives for her actions, like why she turned crews of men into pigs (rightfully so, as it turns out).

Do you make yearly reading goals? What was the best book you read this year?
