Books That Speak To You
Every once in a while, I’m lucky enough to read a book that fills me with emotion–in this case, nostalgia, giddiness, and wonder. The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner was one such book.
I found myself smiling throughout its entirety, eagerly turning pages to find out what happens next. And, oh boy, were there some unexpected twists!!
But the best part were the characters, each one struggling with a different grief, and most entirely oblivious to the love directly in front of them (in a very Austen fashion). Their special relationship with Jane Austen, in turn, made me remember why I love her as well.
Years ago, while studying abroad in London, I went on a day trip to Bath. Two fellow Janeites and I visited the Jane Austen museum there. We took our sweet time, marveling at authorial artifacts, learning fascinating tidbits, and munching on tea and scones (complete with clotted cream, naturally). In fact, we spent so long at the museum, we had to race to catch the bus back to London, only having time to see the famous baths the town is named after from afar. And, reader: I regret nothing.
This book reminded me of that story. And it goes on sale May 26, 2020, which will be a good day for book releases 😉 Be on the lookout–it’s going to be huge!
I’m reading The Jane Austen Society at the moment and it’s a delight! I’m in love with the doctor and I want very good things for Evie.
I’ve never actually read Jane Austen (her books are on my very long list of To Be Read) but these characters shine in their own light.
So glad you’re enjoying it too, Anna!! Ooh, yes, the doctor was also one of my faves <3 And Adeline and Evie who both had so much spunk. And Adam, whose story was surprising and sweet. Agreed, these characters definitely shine all on their own!
I haven’t really got to Adam’s backstory yet but he’s the kind of character that will sneak up and steal my heart without me noticing. I love a quiet man with a tragic backstory.
