Book Talk
Seeing as how we’re approaching the halfway mark for this year (already! I know!), I thought it’d be fun to talk about my fave books from 2019 so far.
Now, my reading style varies depending on what mood I’m in, so there’s a little bit of everything on my list–literary, mystery, YA, even a humorous MG.
Sadie by Courtney Summers–Boy, was this book surprising! A YA mystery told in part from Sadie’s point of view, and part through a true-crime podcast, this book really kept me guessing. And I just loved Sadie. I wanted good things for her, although, honestly, it’s not that kind of story. Highly recommend for those into true crime!
On the Come Up by Angie Thomas–I really enjoyed The Hate U Give so this was a must-read for me, and it did not disappoint! While I didn’t find Bri to be quite as compelling as Star, I absolutely loved the lyrical writing. Bri is a rapper and her voice dripped with cool beats and thoughtful descriptions of her world. All told, this was a super powerful story.
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens–Not only is this one of my faves this year, it’s probably one of my all-time fave reads. The story was enthralling and moving and beautifully written, everything I look for in a good book. Plus, there’s a mystery woven in that isn’t really solved until The. Very. Last. Page. So good!
My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite–Admittedly, this book isn’t for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a quirky story (the title alone is proof!) with just the right amount of snark. And there was a punch in these pages! Given how short it is, Oyinkan weaved quite the tale about two sisters, one of whom is a serial killer.
To Night Owl from Dogfish by Holly Goldberg Sloan and Meg Wolitzer–This is a really fun MG, a sorta retelling of The Parent Trap that is really focused on friendship. I loved the narration style, told purely through emails and letters, and the story itself kept me guessing until the sweet finale. Given that a good chunk of it takes place at camp, this would be a perfect summer read.
I would love love love to hear what books you’ve been reading lately!
Have you read any books I need to add to my TBR pile? Did you enjoy any of the books on my list?
Both the Crawdads and My Sister books are on my summer reading list, which I can not WAIT for!
I really really loved both Circe and Less. Absolutely fantastic reads.
We have very similar taste in books, Rebecca! I also LOVED Circe and Less! I’m kinda jealous you get to read Crawdads for the first time…it’s one of those books that has really stuck with me. Enjoy!!
