Favorite Halloween Books, Movies, and Video Games

I love Halloween. The costumes that show the hottest trends of the year (What’ll it be this year? Duck Dynasty, Sharknado, zombies??), the spicy smell of leaves mixed with artificial sugar, and the stories. Here are my favorite All Hallow’s Eve books, movies, and video games:

dracula

Books

Favorite: Dracula by Bram Stoker. Not only is this a ridiculously entertaining read, but it gives me a better appreciation of spinoffs like Elizabeth Kostova’s The Historian or the new Dracula TV show. And references to Vlaad the Impaler make more sense. That is, except for Robert Pattinson claiming to be a descendant; I’m still skeptical.

Runner Up: Frankenstein by Mary Shelly. My inner scientist will forever love this book for posing the question of Should we instead of Can we. Sure, Dr. Frankenstein could and did bring a monster to life, but should he have? He created a life form who suffered from loneliness and, as a result, did horrific things.

Movies

Favorite: Warm Bodies. A zombie adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, I had no idea what to expect. But it’s a surprisingly touching, hilarious, and quirky movie. The soundtrack might be the best part, but the acting and story-telling are brilliant too.

Runner Up: Let The Right One In. Beautiful and creepy vampire movie about a girl vampire who befriends a young boy and how they help each other. *Warning, watch at your own risk.* The characters are compelling and the visuals, while extremely well done, are rather disturbing.

Video Games

Favorite: Limbo. This game is entrancing and truly a work of art. The graphics are gorgeous, all in black and white with shades of gray. You play a boy who ventures into the underworld to save his younger sister and along the way encounters monsters and complex puzzles.

Runner Up: Costume Quest. This has to be one of the cutest game ever. It’s about a group of kids trick-or-treating. Every costume gives you certain powers and the turn-based battle system occurs in the kids’ imaginations.
